Spotify Is Being Pulled in Different Directions

Deep down, Spotify wants to be the YouTube of audio. Daniel Ek has long been intrigued with the idea of controlling a marketplace where a seemingly infinite amount of user-generated content is matched with a billion customers. Such a goal requires a full-fledged journey into advertising. However, in recent quarters, Spotify has been pulled in a different direction.

Spotify’s Ongoing Search for Profitability

Every few months, Spotify seems to go through a PR fiasco that leads to people saying the company has a toxic culture. The Joe Rogan saga created a wave of pushback that Spotify was incorrectly putting its thumb on the moderation scale. Due to periodic battles over payments to artists, Spotify has a reputation of being hostile to artists. Earlier this week, Spotify took on heat for announcing a substantial round of layoffs right before the holidays. These developments share something in common – each is rooted in Spotify’s desperate search for profit.

An Advertising Pivot Is Beginning

In just the last week, there were two high-level and noteworthy departures at the giants:

  • Meta’s advertising head (who served as COO)

  • Amazon’s consumer retail chief

Earlier in the year, two noteworthy departures were found among smaller companies striving to one day become giants:

  • Spotify’s chief architect of its podcasting strategy

  • Roku’s head of platform business

At first, the four departures may seem unrelated to each other.

Elon Musk Buys Twitter

It’s been quite the April for Elon Musk. Within just three weeks, Musk went from disclosing that he had spent months quietly amassing a 9% stake in Twitter, to accepting and then turning down a Twitter board seat, to finally having Twitter’s board accept his hostile takeover bid for $44 billion.

Musk buying Twitter is a big deal for a few reasons:

The Spotify and Roku Squeeze

Spotify and Roku have a lot more in common than meets the eye (and ear). Both companies are fascinated with advertising-driven business models in which listener and viewer time and engagement is monetized via delivering ads. Roku is much further along in its advertising pursuit. Nearly 90% of Roku’s revenue is generated by ads while just 10% of Spotify revenue is from ads. However, both companies have signaled that advertising is where their growth and momentum will be found.

Music’s Trouble

The number of people paying good money for music continues to rise. In the U.S. alone, 75 million people are paying on average $90 a year to listen to music through a streaming service. On its own that’s a great thing, and music rights holders are riding decades-long emotional (and financial) highs. However, we are seeing what amounts to music’s destruction continue to unfold before our eyes.
